WORLD ELEPHANT DAY

A celebration of this amazing animal which has walked the earth for a very, very long time. The fossil record indicates that more than 300 species have walked the earth over a period of 55 million years.
Today their very existence is threatened by humans .....

Today we celebrate these iconic animals and we pledge to never give up trying to save each and every one of the ones left on earth today.

Elephant lives are threatened by the ivory trade and by trophy hunting. The number of slain elephants is shocking, heartbreaking and completely unsustainable. We are talking extinction in about a decade...
The genepool will be inadequate way before then...

The rescue and rehab of young orphaned calves is becoming more important, even crucial every day. These orphans will mean a new beginning to build from again.
Please support the existing ones in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Thailand and the ones WAR is helping to establish in poaching stricken countries like Mali, Mozambique, Chad etc.

Little bull elephant Kwama races towards his Keepers!

It is encouraging to see little Kwama regaining his strength following his difficult start. With the loving support of the Keepers and fellow orphans Kawaida and Kiko, we hope Kwama will continue to feed well and thrive under our care.

NEW RESCUE: Meet Tafuta

Rescued on the 30th October, we named this little girl Tafuta from the Swahili word ‘to search’ because, despite the very best efforts of our pilots who tried to locate her mother, we could find no female herds nearby.

Her sunken cheeks suggested she had been without her mother for quite some time and was clearly in a desperate way, having been found standing alone in the stifling heat with little shade. She greedily accepted a bottle of milk before we loaded her onto the plane for an evening flight to our Nursery.

During the night, she received a lifesaving intravenous drip and again took to her bottle of milk very well, desperately seeking nutrients. As a result of the influx of new rescues into the Nursery, several orphans have been moved to different stockades and Tafuta’s new neighbour, Kawaida, was quick to offer her tiny trunk through the wooden partition to offer come comfort and company.

Since her first night, Tafuta has struggled to overcome her dehydration and exhaustion, but we have been working hard to administer IV drips and will continue to do our utmost to get her through this difficult time.

A picture of hope

An influx of tiny baby elephants, accompanied by orphan giraffe Kiko, means our Nairobi Nursery is bursting with life.

Right now our teams are caring for 34 infant elephants, Kiko, Maxwell the rhino and our two orphaned Ostriches at the Nursery alone. While each individual only needs our help due to a personal tragedy that took their mothers from them, we are in a position to offer them hope for a future back in the wild.
