Sagalassos: An Enduring Treasure in the Ta**us Mountains
Nestled high in the Ta**us Mountains near Burdur, Turkey, Sagalassos was once a bustling ancient city established in the 5th century BCE. Initially part of the Hellenistic Kingdom of Pergamon, this city flourished during the Roman Empire, becoming a key urban hub in the Pisidia region.
Renowned for its stunning monumental structures, Sagalassos boasts an impressive theater, Roman baths, and an exquisite nymphaeum (fountain), showcasing the remarkable engineering and artistic prowess of the Romans. The city was also famous for its high-quality ceramics, which played a pivotal role in its economic vitality and solidified its importance in regional trade networks.
Regrettably, Sagalassos faced a decline following a series of devastating earthquakes in the 6th and 7th centuries CE, compounded by economic challenges and shifts in trade routes. Over time, the city fell into disrepair and was ultimately deserted, with its erstwhile splendor concealed for centuries.
Today, Sagalassos stands as one of Turkey's most significant archaeological sites. Its well-preserved ruins offer a window into ancient urban life in Anatolia, drawing researchers and visitors alike who are eager to delve into its captivating past.
