The Mountain Bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci), Kenya’s rarest antelope, is a shy and majestic animal found only in the country’s highland forests, including Mount Kenya and the Aberdares. Decades of poaching, habitat destruction, and disease have driven this striking animal to the brink of extinction, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild by the early 2000s.

Conservation efforts have since taken a global and national turn. Breeding programs in zoos around the world helped preserve the species, and some of these captive-bred Bongos are now being reintroduced to Kenya. Led by the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and international organizations, Bongos are being acclimated in special sanctuaries before being released into protected forests. Local communities have also been engaged to support the conservation process.

Saving the Mountain Bongo is not just about protecting a single species—it’s about preserving the ecosystems that sustain them and the cultural and natural heritage they represent. Their survival offers hope in a time of environmental crisis, reminding us of the importance of collective action to protect what remains of our wild world..
