Baby chicks have very weak, undeveloped digestive system. They cannot absorb all the nutrients from the bugs and worms their parents feed them. Saseka has come into season, and with no dominant males currently in the area, after Malwane pushed further south, she has attracted her son, Nzalo. They have been seen mating over the last two days.

It’s not something we commonly witness, but in leopards, when a female is in oestrus, her hormonal drives can override normal avoidance of close relatives if no unrelated dominant male is available or in her territory. Nature isn’t always what we’d expect.

Saseka rasping as she walks past the vehicle, calling out and searching for Nzalo. An incredible glimpse into the raw, complex, and sometimes confronting realities of life in the wild.
