One hour. Not a minute longer.
That's the rule for gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda. Sixty minutes, in small groups, a few metres from a family of mountain gorillas. Getting there usually takes a lot longer. You climb through dense rainforest behind a ranger who reads the trail in broken branches and flattened grass. It's warm, it's wet, and nobody can tell you how long it will take.
And then you stop.
A silverback who takes you in and looks away again. A youngster dropping out of a tree. The sound of leaves being chewed, and nothing else. Almost everyone comes back saying the same thing: that hour felt like five minutes.
What makes it so rare is exactly that limit. Small groups, strict rules, a limited number of permits each day. This isn't an attraction โ it's a visit to a family that is otherwise left in peace.
