The Rivalry

The grass was still wet with morning when it began.

Two rams stood a few feet apart, heads low, eyes locked — the kind of stillness that only comes right before something happens. Around them, the savanna carried on as if nothing was wrong. Birds called. A breeze moved through the grass. But between these two, the air had gone tight.

Then, the charge.

Horns met horns with a crack that startled a pair of birds into flight. Neither ram gave ground. They pushed, twisted, pulled back, and pushed again — each clash a question, each pause an answer no one liked. This wasn't rage. It was ritual. Older than either of them, older than the road that brought us here to watch.

For a long moment, they stayed locked together, breath heavy, legs braced in the dust — two equals refusing to be the first to yield.

The grass here doesn't remember borders. It stretches from one horizon to the next, unbroken except for the acacia crowns and the low blue line of hills in the distance — and this morning, it belongs to both of them.

He walks it the way his father did, and his father's father before that: unhurried, barefoot, a red-checkered shuka slung over one shoulder like it's always been part of him.
