January to March: The Mara's Best-Kept Secret

Many travellers overlook the first few months of the year, but they offer an equally rewarding safari experience.

Here's why:
The landscape is fresh and beautifully green after the short rains, creating stunning scenery for photography.
Fewer visitors mean quieter game drives and more intimate wildlife sightings.
Many resident herbivores, including impalas, gazelles, warthogs and resident wildebeest, give birth during this period, making it an exciting time to witness young wildlife and the predator activity that follows.

On World Ranger Day, we honour the people whose work helps protect wildlife, habitats and natural heritage.

Rangers are often on the frontline of conservation. Their work can involve protecting habitats, monitoring wildlife, supporting visitor safety, responding to threats and helping preserve natural spaces for future generations. Many travellers enjoy protected areas without seeing the daily effort that makes those experiences possible.

Some build visibility through heavy advertising. We have always believed in something quieter.

A safari is often remembered through wildlife sightings, landscapes and photographs. But behind every journey is a wider network of people and places.

Done well, safari travel can support trained guides, drivers, lodge teams, camp staff, local suppliers, park systems, conservation groups, research work, schools, communities and young people growing up near protected landscapes. This is why travel choices matter.

At Discover Kenya Safaris, we work with hotels, lodges, camps, airlines, national park authorities, schools, communities and conservation groups. These relationships help make the safari comfortable and magical for travellers, while also supporting the people and ecosystems connected to the journey.
