After a very indulgent coffee break, we headed to the magical in South Horr 🌋🌴—tucked between desert plains, extinct volcanoes, and the ever-mysterious Lake Turkana.

Think: rustic luxury, thatched roofs, Samburu hospitality, bucket showers, and seriously good homemade food by the amazing Karina and her team!

Six cozy rooms, a starry-sky campfire, views for days and a birders’ paradise if we may!

We lifted off from Sarara just after breakfast—excited and nervous. There’s truly nothing like a helicopter safari in Kenya: the thrill of liftoff, the shifting altitudes, the sheer majesty unfolding below…

Our route northwest traced one of the most spectacular corridors in East Africa.

~First, we soared over the Mathews Range—an island of ancient forest rising out of arid scrubland. Home to elephants, rare birds, and the Samburu’s sacred groves, these green peaks are often called “Kenya’s sky islands.”

~Next came the Milgis Luggah—a seasonal riverbed that snakes through dry country, lifeline to nomadic communities and wildlife alike. From the air, it’s a silver scar etched into the land, pulsing with hidden stories of survival and migration.

⛰️ Then the Ndoto Mountains appeared—rugged, mystical, and rising like a wall of stone from the plains. The Ndotos are steeped in Samburu lore and stand guard over a landscape where time feels ancient and untouched.

Finally, we landed at the base of Mt Poi, a dramatic granite outcrop beloved by climbers and walkers. Tea never tasted better—sipped on warm rock, surrounded by silence and stone.

This is more than a route. It’s a journey through geologic time, cultural memory, and wild, uncontainable beauty.

Happy World Wildlife Day 2025!

This year’s theme, "Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet," highlights the power of sustainable finance in protecting wildlife while supporting local communities.

At African Parks arks, this vision comes to life through innovative conservation funding models like carbon credits and Verifiable Nature Units (VNUs), ensuring long-term financial sustainability for protected areas.

🌱 Conservation in Action: Carbon Credits at Chinko
In the Central African Republic, Chinko Conservation Area generates Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) credits by preventing deforestation and managing land sustainably. Companies like Bel Group purchase these credits, funding ranger salaries, anti-poaching patrols, and community conservation initiatives.

🌿 A New Currency for Nature – Verifiable Nature Units (VNUs)
Alongside carbon credits, African Parks is piloting VNUs with The Landbanking Group. VNUs fund measurable conservation outcomes—like habitat protection and biodiversity restoration—creating a scalable, transparent way to invest in nature.

Why This Matters
By investing in nature-based solutions, African Parks is securing the future of Africa’s landscapes, biodiversity, and local livelihoods.

The recent days have brought intriguing experiences for us at Africa-Untamed, as we've had the pleasure of hosting a historian guest with a keen interest in the history of human civilization, particularly focusing on the influence of The Oman along the Kenyan coast.

Throughout antiquity, the Swahili coast attracted merchants from distant regions, spanning from Mogadishu to Sofala, and extending to West India, Persia, and Arabia.

By the 8th century, an influx of Muslims, particularly to Kilwa and Zanzibar, intensified trade in ivory, gold, and slaves, primarily from Muscat/Oman.

This trade escalated in the 12th century with the founding of Lamu, possibly due to increased demand following the prosperity of Southwest Asia after the Mongol invasion.
Concurrently, the coastal regions embraced Islam, leading to a significant Arabization and Islamicization of the Swahili culture and language.
