Spring in Russian cities doesn’t arrive by the calendar —
it arrives by feeling.

In longer evenings filled with light.
In melting snow and the first puddles reflecting building facades.
In people who suddenly slow down, as if allowing themselves to breathe again.

Cities change almost imperceptibly:
cafés set out their first outdoor tables,
jackets become lighter,
windows open more often than the news updates.

In some places, spring is still winter with hope.
In others, it’s the scent of wet earth and asphalt.
And somewhere else — the first flowers blooming against concrete blocks and old churches.

Russian spring is never loud.
It’s restrained, a little shy,
but once it arrives, it stays in your memory for a long time.

And perhaps it’s in the cities where this feeling is strongest of all.

Winter fishing in Russia is not just a hobby. It’s a ritual
Imagine a frozen lake stretching to the horizon. The ice is thick — sometimes more than half a meter. People drill a small round hole in the surface, set up a simple stool, pour hot tea from a thermos… and wait.
This is ice fishing — and for many Russians, it’s a tradition that goes back generations.
❄️ How it works
A special ice drill is used to make a hole. The fishing rod is small and simple. Fishermen sit directly on the ice, sometimes in temperatures of -15°C or even -25°C. Warm boots, layered clothing, and patience are essential.
🐟 What they catch
Perch, pike, zander, whitefish — depending on the region. In northern areas, fishing can feel almost Arctic, while in central Russia it’s more about quiet lakes and snowy forests.
🔥 Why people love it
It’s not really about the fish.
It’s about silence. About the crunch of snow under your boots. About the steam rising from hot tea in freezing air. About being far away from the noise of the city.
Often it turns into a social gathering: friends cook fish soup right on the ice, share stories, and watch the winter sun move slowly across the sky.
For foreigners it may look extreme.
For Russians, it’s peaceful.
Would you sit on a frozen lake at -20°C just to feel that kind of silence?

This winter season in Murmansk is coming to an end.
Polar nights are slowly giving way to daylight — but the magic of the Russian Arctic is far from over. And if it’s been calling your name… it’s calling louder than ever.

The Arctic winter isn’t just beautiful — it’s intense.
Icy roads, extreme weather, snowstorms, and raw northern nature turn every kilometer into a true adventure. And then, suddenly, the sky ignites with the Northern Lights — powerful, unpredictable, unforgettable.

Snowmobile rides.
Husky sledding.
Frozen rivers and mountain roads.
Endless white landscapes and that legendary road to Teriberka — right to the edge of the world.

Next year, we’re heading back north with our annual Arctic expedition, split into two epic journeys:

📍 Saint Petersburg → Murmansk
🗓 February 20 – March 1
