- THE RUINS OF ANCIENT BALASAGYN

Burana Tower is on the site of the former Karakhanid city of Balasagyn, founded in the mid-10th century. Balasagyn was contemporaneous with Kashgar and shared equal administrative importance with it as one of the two capitals of the Eastern Khanate.
The name “Burana” most probably comes from wrongly pronounced word “Monara” which means Minaret. Minaret is an obligated part of any mosque, it is a tower from which the Muslims were called up for the next praying. Some centuries ago the tower was 44 metres high, but after an earthquake in early 1900, the upper part fell down.

The top of the minaret is accessed by interior steps that steeply wind up the narrow dark passageway. On the roof, your historical imagination is given inspiration by the view of the surrounding valley and the not-too distant mountains.

To the northwest of the minaret is the eroded and grass-covered citadel. The stone park to the north of the tower is an open-air museum displaying stone figures dating from the 6th-10th centuries around the Chui Valley near the rivers of Chui, Issyk-Kul and Talas. Some of the figures have a benign, even charming, visage.
Also on view are petroglyphs (pictures and script on rock), some of which date back to 2 BC; stone tools found near Burana; and stone steles with Arab writing dating from the 14th century.

Balasagyn city originaly was covering the territory of 25 sq. kilomiters and was an important trade of the Great Silk Road.
Balasagyn was the birthplace of Jusup Balasagyn, born in the city either in 1015 or 1016. In 1069, Jusup wrote Kutadgu Bilig (translated as Blessing Knowledge in English). The book, which Jusup wrote in his native Turkic language using Arab script, was an outstanding work of Central Asia’s culture. Today, Jusup’s opus is still popular with Kyrgyz readers.

All in all, for the historically-minded, the Burana environs evoke images of a distant and forgotten past, in which Silk Road caravans, laden with cargo of East Asian luxury, descend from the mountains to the plains to stop briefly in Burana before continuing their journey — still so far to go — to the west.

Kyrgyzstan is known for its snowy mountains, virgin nature, culture, and especially for its amazing lake, Issyk Kul. The beautiful Lake Issyk Kul is completely ringed by the massive snow-capped Tien Shan Mountains, 3000-4000m in height.

Enclosed on all sides by the snowy peaks of the Tien Shan Mountains, Lake Issyk Kul, literally meaning “hot lake”, is said to be the world’s second-largest alpine lake or the second highest navigable lake in the world after Lake Titicaca in South America. The lake never freezes even in the depths of winter due to thermal activity, strong winds, physics of deep water and the unique microclimate over the lake. Called "The Pearl of Central Asia", the lake changes colour from pale green to turquoise blue, depending on the time of day and the position of the sun. The crystal clear water has so exceptional a blue colour, that it is three to four times more saturated by colour than Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Anyone would be astonished at the size and scenery of huge celestial snow-capped mountain peaks shining from across from what must be one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The area around the lake is well known to locals and tourists from Kazakhstan and Russia for its beautiful, sandy shores. Most of the resorts and hotels are on the north shore of the lake.
