Temple : Bakong
Built : 881
Reign : King Indravarman I (877-889)
Dedicated to : Lord Shiva

Bakong temple remains a special case in the history of Khmer architecture since it stands outs as the first five-tiered temple often referred by researchers as Temple Mountain". King Indravarman I consecrated it in 881, two years after the consecration of the Preah Ko temple. the time, the tradition wanted the King to erect a monument dedicated to the memory of the ancestors before building structures in his own glory. You are currently standing inside the 900m x 700m enclosure of Bakong temple that has 22 brick monuments, the majority of which are covered by vegetation or hidden behind residential structures. At the front section there is 400m x 300m moat bordered by laterite d***s. The entrance causeway of the temple is flanked by two stand-alone Naga sculptures where the long tails bear the marks of Garuda claws. It was the first time in Khmer architecture where Naga figures were sculpted as stand-alone masterpieces spanning along both sides of the causeway.

The central tower of the highest level built more recently dates from the 12th century. Unfortunately, the architectural style of the original tower has not yet been discovered.
