I stayed four days in Goa and mostly just relaxed and went to some of my favorite restaurants. I rented an apartment in the same complex in Anjuna that I had stayed in for 10 days during the Covid madness in February of 2022. It was a nice end to five weeks of sometimes stressful and exhausting traveling. I was ready for a break, but I still had two more countries to visit before I would return to South Africa.

I left Gokarna and with a sense of relief headed to Goa, my final destination in India. At this point, I’d almost reached my India travel breaking point and was ready for a new country. I’d had enough of the mountains of trash, constant horn honking and wandering cows. To top it off, during my train ride to Goa I had the displeasure of discovering what dead cows smell like in a hot and airless rail tunnel after they’ve been unintentionally slaughtered by a speeding engine. I described it at the time as “what hell must smell like.”

I rented an apartment in Anjuna, Goa for $84/night. It was Christmas (2024), so the rate was higher than normal.

I spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2024 in the popular beach destination of Gokarna, located in the Indian state of Karnataka. I paid $5.00 for the 2.5 hour train journey from Mangaluru and stayed in a “deluxe king room” at Hotel Om in Gokarna for $59/night with breakfast.

As you can see from the photos and video below, Gokarna has a world class beach, but like most places in India there is a serious trash problem that detracts from its natural beauty. Perhaps the garbage issue will be addressed and corrected as the Indian economy expands and poverty and government corruption are reduced. We’ll just have to hope, wait and see.

To break up the long journey between Kannur and Gokarna, I decided to stay one night in Mangaluru. There must not have been a lot to see or do because I only took one photo and that was inexplicably of a pink office building…🤷‍♂️.

In Mangaluru I stayed at the AJ Grand Hotel for $59/night with breakfast. Apparently it wasn’t a very memorable room because I didn’t take any photos.

I took a train from Kannur to Mangaluru. The ticket was just $5 for the 2.5 hour journey.

I left Kochi after three days and headed further north to the scenic beach town of Kannur in the state of Kerala. Kannur (population 63,000) has some of the best beaches in southern India, but has largely remained unspoiled by the large-scale tourism prevalent in more popular destinations like Goa. If you’re looking for a laid back beach place without the noise and crowds, I highly recommend staying a few days or longer in Kannur.

While in Kannur I stayed at Choice Beach House for $26/night with breakfast. My flight from Kochi to Kannur on Indigo Airlines cost $50.

Kochi (population 677,000) is a coastal Indian city in the state of Kerala with centuries of recorded history highlighted by its exposure to numerous European colonial and trading powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, French and English. I paid for a tuk tuk tour of the historic part of the city and was able to see the most important sites in a few hours. My favorite stops of the tour were at the Dutch laundry, Jewtown, the spice market and the church that houses the grave of Vasco de Gama.

I would categorize Kochi as a “must-visit” destination for any southern India itinerary and would recommend spending a minimum of two full days in the city.

The next stop on my journey north to my final stop in Goa was the impressive coastal city of Kochi. The city exudes colonial charm and has a fascinating history having been occupied and reoccupied throughout its history by several European powers.

While in Kochi, I stayed at the Rossitta Wood Castle Hotel, which is housed in a restored English colonial building, for $69/night with breakfast. The train from Varkala to Kochi was $10 for the 3.5 hour journey.

Varkala (population 40,048) is a legendary Indian beach town that became a popular travel destination for backpackers and travelers back in the late 1990s who came for the beaches, surf waves and cliffside chill out scene. Two days in Varkala was enough for me, but if you’re feeling the vibe and you have the time you may want to stay a couple of months. Lots of people do just that.

After two days in Kanniyakumari - the southernmost point in India - I turned north and made my way by rail to the beautiful beach town of Varkala, located in the state of Kerala. The first class train ticket cost me $16 for the 3-hour journey. I rented an Airbnb room that was attached to one of the best cliffside restaurants in town for $67/night.

I went to Kanniyakumari because I wanted to go to the southernmost point of India. I knew nothing about it, including that there was a giant statue of an Indian philosopher erected on an island outside the city. Although I was a bit apprehensive about joining another claustrophobic queue to visit an Indian tourist site, I paid the minimal fee and crossed the bay to see the statue of Vivekananda up close and personal. The statue and a nearby 18th century Dutch fort are worthy tourist attractions and make Kanniyakumari worth 2-3 days of any southern India travel itinerary.
