🐘🇱🇰 WHY DO HUNDREDS OF ELEPHANTS GATHER AT MINNERIYA? 🌿✨

Every year during Sri Lanka’s dry season, one of the most spectacular wildlife events in Asia takes place at Minneriya — the famous “Elephant Gathering.” 🐘🐘🐘

But have you ever wondered why so many wild elephants come together here? 🤔

💧 It’s not simply because of water!

According to research and observations by wildlife expert Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya, one of the main reasons is what happens when the water level of the Minneriya Reservoir begins to fall.

🌿 As the water recedes, large areas of land around the reservoir become exposed. Fresh, nutritious grass begins to grow on these areas, providing an excellent food source for elephants.

💚 This fresh grass is particularly valuable because it contains important nutrients, including higher levels of protein and minerals.

💧 Of course, the remaining water in the reservoir is also an important resource for drinking and bathing.

🐘 Family groups and individual elephants gather in this open landscape to feed, drink, socialise and move between the surrounding forests and grasslands.

🌏 That unique combination of food, water and habitat makes Minneriya one of the most remarkable places in Sri Lanka to witness wild Asian elephants in their natural environment.
