🇱🇰✨ Kandy Esala Perahera - Where Sri Lanka’s History Comes Alive
The Kandy Esala Perahera is far more than a spectacular parade. Held annually in Kandy during the Esala season, it is one of Sri Lanka’s most cherished religious and cultural traditions, centred around paying homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha at Sri Dalada Maligawa.
For centuries, this grand procession has brought together faith, history, music, dance and tradition in one unforgettable celebration. The Perahera is made up of processions from the four historic Devales - Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini - together with the magnificent Dalada Maligawa procession.
As the night unfolds through the streets of Kandy, you can witness magnificently adorned elephants, traditional Kandyan dancers, drummers, fire performers, whip-crackers, torch bearers, flag bearers and ceremonial dignitaries moving together to the rhythm of traditional music.
At the heart of the procession is the Maligawa Tusker, carrying a ceremonial casket containing a replica of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The sacred relic itself remains safely enshrined within the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
What makes the Perahera truly special is that you are not simply watching a parade - you are witnessing a living tradition that connects modern Sri Lanka with its ancient royal, Buddhist and cultural heritage.
