Empowering young women in Hanthana

Jetwing Eco Holidays joined hands with partners to carry out Liyaka Mahimaya, a community initiative supporting young women through reusable menstrual kits and educational sessions on feminine hygiene, sexual health and overall wellbeing.

This initiative was carried out together with Days for Girls, Saheli Foundation and AAUW National, with invaluable support from the student volunteers of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

As we step into International Women’s Day today, we are proud to stand alongside partners working to create meaningful impact in communities across Sri Lanka.

As Sri Lanka marks 78 years of independence we honour the essence of our nation. It lives in the strength of our people the warmth of our communities and the timeless beauty of our land.

From ancient capitals and highland trails to forest sanctuaries and coastal wonders every place holds a story that continues to inspire.

We are proud to share these stories with the world crafted with care rooted in heritage and carried forward together.

In the quiet of the forest, every detail sharpens. A leopard rests on a fallen trunk, eyes steady, body still, listening before the night fully settles.

This is not a moment of drama but of awareness. In the wild, patience is power and stillness speaks louder than movement.

Day six had continued into the hills with a road update and warm invitation from Sudath Asanka a local hiking guide in Riverston.

He had spoken of the region’s steady return to form after recent setbacks with roads now accessible and key sites across the Knuckles range open to visitors. From Rathota to Laggala and through villages like Atanwala and Pitawala travel had begun to move forward again.

The message had been simple. The landscape remains. The welcome remains. And those who care for it are ready to guide the way.

Day six had brought the team to Riverston passing through Weraugasthenna and into Rathota where the journey had slowed for a warm village welcome.

A home cooked lunch had been prepared and shared with a local host who spoke of the joy she finds in welcoming travellers. Teaching them how to cook sharing ingredients by hand and introducing small parts of tradition had become something she looked forward to.

Every visit becomes a reminder that connection often begins with something as simple as a meal.
