From reef-fringed beaches on the south coast to quiet stretches of sand along the east, Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the Indian Ocean to witness sea turtles in the wild. Five species including green turtles, hawksbill turtles and leatherbacks visit the island’s shores, often returning at night to nest under the moonlight. Watching hatchlings make their first journey to the ocean is one of those unforgettable Sri Lankan experiences that stays with you long after the trip ends.
But turtles are only a small part of Sri Lanka’s wildlife story. Despite its size, the island is home to an incredible range of biodiversity from leopards roaming the forests of Yala National Park to wild elephants crossing the plains of Minneriya National Park. Add in blue whales off the southern coast, colourful birdlife in the wetlands, and lush rainforests filled with endemic species, and Sri Lanka feels less like a single destination and more like a natural world of its own.

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress located in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. Rising about 200 meters (660 feet) above the surrounding plains, it is one of the country’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by King Kashyapa (reigned 473–495 CE): Sigiriya was developed as the royal citadel of King Kashyapa, who seized the throne by overthrowing his father, King Dhatusena. Fortress and Palace: Atop the rock, Kashyapa built a magnificent palace, complete with gardens, pools, and defensive structures. Lion’s Gate: The name "Sigiriya" comes from the word Sinhagiri, meaning “Lion Rock.” A massive gateway in the shape of a lion once stood at the entrance to the summit. Art and Architecture: Sigiriya is famous for its frescoes, mirror wall, and advanced water gardens, showcasing incredible engineering and artistic skills of ancient Sri Lanka. After King Kashyapa's Death: The site was abandoned as a royal residence and later used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.
