Some of those rare moments when we were able to get up close with the elusive leopard in the montane forests.

Catching a glimpse of the Sri Lankan leopard in these mysterious mountains is a real challenge, unlike in the lowland national parks. They are extremely hard to spot, perfectly camouflaged with the rugged terrain.

One must listen carefully to alarm calls from other wildlife especially sambar deer, squirrels, and monkeys and also have sharp eyes to notice even the slightest movement in the plains.

Above all, to photograph these elusive cats, it is important to give them enough space to feel comfortable in your presence and to respect their natural behavior.

Mannar turns pink each year as Greater flamingos arrive, brushing the quiet lagoons with soft color and life. Drawn by shallow, food-rich waters and warm coastal winds, these winter visitors transform the northern wetlands into one of Sri Lanka’s most delicate seasonal wonders.

Flamingos visit Sri Lanka to avoid harsh winters, drawn by warm, shallow lagoons rich in algae and tiny crustaceans that provide both food and their pink color. Mannar, with its calm waters and low disturbance, offers an ideal place to feed and rest, making it an important seasonal refuge along their migratory journey.

Walking through the misty landscapes of the Sri Lankan highlands feels calm and grounding.
Clouds drift slowly across the plains as they meet the sky, shaping a fragile montane ecosystem that feels almost untouched.
This is a natural home for montane flora and fauna, living quietly all around you.
At Horton Plains National Park, every step carries a simple kind of magic, where nature reveals itself gently and without effort.

Leopard couple in the golden hour

My clients and I took an early morning ride, hoping to see a leopard. About half an hour after leaving the bungalow, we spotted two leopards strolling along the canopy on the dusky Wilpattu road — such a beautiful sight!
They disappeared into the forest, so we decided to begin our waiting game near a nearby waterhole. A few minutes later, the male and female emerged into the golden morning light. Their rosettes shimmered in the sun — a perfect morning and setup to photograph these magnificent big cats.

An amazing two days in the wilderness of Wilpattu National Park with my clients 🌿🐾

Highlights of the tour included spending hours with a leopard mating pair in the golden morning light, witnessing three incredible sloth bear sightings (including one right from Maradamaduwa Bungalow at night!), and spotting elephants, crocodiles, and countless bird species.

Truly unforgettable moments in the wild.

This young, handsome male was spotted at the last minute, just before we headed to the bungalow. Despite the extremely low light, I was able to capture a portrait that does some justice to his striking presence. I particularly like this image, as it brings out the character of a future ruler of Wilpattu.
