🐘🇱🇰The Sri Lankan elephant (Elephas maximus maximus) is an endangered subspecies and an integral part of our island’s natural heritage and ecosystems. In 2025, 408 elephant deaths and 149 human deaths resulting from the human-elephant conflict, according to data from the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) reported through late December.

Habitat loss, fragmentation and blocked traditional movement corridors force elephants increasingly into human settlements and agricultural areas. Elephants need large, connected landscapes to find food, water and mates. Protecting forests and wildlife corridors, improving land-use planning and helping communities coexist safely with elephants are essential.

Sri Lanka offers some of the best opportunities in Asia to observe wild Asian elephants in their natural habitats.
The principal national parks for elephant sightings include Udawalawe, Minneriya, Kaudulla, Wasgamuwa, Wilpattu and Yala.

Saving the elephant ultimately means protecting Sri Lanka’s biodiversity and natural heritage for future generations. ✨

When the road becomes a message for coexistence… 🐘💚

This World Elephant Day, our Open Deck Double-Decker took on a very special purpose—not just to carry people, but to carry a message that matters to all of us.

The Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) chose our double-decker as a moving platform to create greater public awareness about one of Sri Lanka’s most urgent conservation challenges: Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC).

Sri Lanka is facing one of the world’s most serious human-elephant conflicts. More than 3,400 elephants and over 1,100 people have lost their lives in the past nine years—a tragic reminder that this is not simply a wildlife issue, but a human issue too.

On World Elephant Day, we are reminded that elephants need space to survive, while communities need safety and livelihoods. The answer cannot be about choosing one over the other. It must be about finding ways for humans and elephants to coexist.

We are proud that our iconic double-decker could play a small part in taking this important message onto the streets of Colombo and into the public eye.

Because sometimes, a journey can do more than take you somewhere.

It can make you stop, think and care. 🐘
