Great Srilankan Adventures

Great Srilankan Adventures Sharing my passion for the Great Srilankan Outdoors with you On a broader scenario, we are involved in lobbying nature conservation and preservation.

On a charitable platform, we distribute educational aid in the form of books, toys to little children.Through the grateful assistance of large group of followers of our activities on social media, past participants of our programs, interested parties and well wishers we gather substantial amount of supplies as donations for the betterment of a few education facilities in selected areas. This

involved clearing of old trails abandoned for almost 3 decades- for visitors to travel. Teaming up with Friends of Wilpattu we have managed to uplift infrastructure and avaiability safe drinking water for the park goers. It remains our firm intention and committed effort to help the staff and local communities connected to the parks to benefit through all our activities. We source expert advice and guidence form internationl experts and knowledge bodies for our nature/ wild life activities - making sure we apply uptodate, leading knowledge and practices available to academics and field practitioners across the world. We discover hitherto unknown/ lesser known or now not frequented trails, sites, locations and attractions. This creates added, renewed interest among the participants and public. Our objective of conservation and preservation could be achived through awareness creation, and chanelling relevant Authorities to take necessary action. We source assistance from local service providers e.g. boat operators, jeep hire, accomodation providers in the relevant areas. Further we source labour locally as well as all supplies - fruits , vegetables promoting whereever possible the unique supplies of that area, thereby giving added income sources to people. We uplift practices and infrastructure available with local suppliers and facilities . Be it the comfort and the safety aspects of the boats and jeeps, medical first aid, night illumination around campsites by the use of solar power, safe disposal of waste, these practices introduced by our work have now been adapted by the local operators. What we've tought others have now begin beneft the larger society.

A highlight for us in 2022 was the bespoke kids and young adult summer vacation Great Srilankan Adventures.

This 6day experience started with a train ride to Ella. Where we spent 2nights Glamping and experiencing all the popular activities and exploring hidden locations. Then we moved onto to Panama on the east coast, where we camped out and explored the best of what Kumana had to offer as a full-day experience. Then we moved onto siyabalanduwa to explore two of the historical locations on foot.

Can't wait to see what's in store in 2023 Kids experiences.

On our last last day of exploring Wilpattu we went in search of its wild residents and its unique features.

Wildlife, Geography, Archaeology, History and interesting locations on the western border of SL.

Located approx. 180 km north of Colombo, Wilpattu is the largest and one of the oldest National Parks of Sri Lanka. The unique feature of this park is the existence of "Villus" (natural lakes) - natural, sand-rimmed water basins or depressions that fill with rainwater. The Mahavansa records that in 543 BC Prince Vijaya landed at Tambapanni now known as Kudrimalai Point (Horse Point), established the Sinhalese kingdom in Tambapanni and founded the Sinhala nation. It’s also recorded Kudrimalai, was visited by a subject of Emperor Claudius in 47 AD, who was blown off course by the monsoon. The local king later sent his own envoys to Rome during the time of Pliny. One of its other unique features are the different types of vegetation’s, such as salt grass and low scrub monsoon forest with tall emergents, such as palu and satin, milla, weera, ebony and wewarna. 31 species of mammals have been identified within Wilpattu national park. The most prominent of these species are the elephants, sloth bear, leopard and water buffalo. Some of the other common residents are Spotted Deer, peacock, sambhur, mongoose, Wild boar and the many bird species.

Bordering Wilpattu Kalpitiya lagoon is an unrivalled marine sanctuary with diversity of habitats ranging from flat coastal plains, mangrove swamps, elephant inhibited jungles, vast sand dune beaches and home to the pink dolphins. 14 islands together make up over 1600 hectares of land.
