The most vibrant and esteemed Buddhist cultural pageant in Sri Lanka is Nawam Maha Perahera.
Every year, Nawam Maha Perahera is celebrated on Nawam poya day ( poya day of month of February ).
The festival's high point is the colorful elephant pageant, in which 100 decked elephants alter the streets of Colombo. All of the action during the Nawam Maha Perahera celebration takes place in the Gangaramaya Temple, which is situated in Hunupitiya near the charming Beira Lake. More than a thousand entertainers and schoolchildren participate in the inauguration procession, waving vibrant flags as they go. Flautists, stilt walkers, conch shell blowers, and percussion bands provide appropriate accompaniment to the parade.
