Operation Sagar Bandhu is India's humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mission launched on November 28, 2025, to aid Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah caused severe flooding, landslides, and widespread destruction.
BackgroundCyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka on November 27, 2025, leading to significant loss of life, displacement, and infrastructure damage across the island. India responded swiftly under its Neighbourhood First policy, coordinating with Sri Lankan authorities to deliver urgent support. The operation underscores India's role as a first responder in the Indian Ocean region.
Key Assistance Provided
India delivered over 53 tons of relief materials, including food, water, medicines, tents, blankets, hygiene kits, and emergency equipment.
Indian Air Force aircraft like C-130J and IL-76 airlifted supplies and deployed 80 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel for search-and-rescue.
Indian Navy ships such as INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri, and INS Sukanya provided rations, helicopters for evacuations, and additional aid.
