This photo make Sigiriya: The Majestic Lion Rock Fortress in Its Golden Age

Over 1,500 years ago, deep in the heart of Sri Lanka, Sigiriya stood not just as a rock—but as a magnificent royal citadel. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains, the rock was transformed by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD into a dazzling palace complex, now considered one of the finest examples of ancient urban planning.

At its peak, Sigiriya was a vibrant royal city. A massive lion-shaped gateway stood at the entrance of the summit, giving the fortress its name—Sinha Giriya or "Lion Rock." Climbing through the giant paws of the lion, visitors would ascend to the top where King Kashyapa’s palace gleamed in the sun, adorned with polished white walls and intricate murals.

🇩🇪🤝🇱🇰 Discovering Ancient Glassmaking in Sri Lanka: The Giribawa Project 🏺✨

Did you know that Sri Lanka was home to a unique glassmaking tradition during the ancient and early medieval periods? 🏺🔮

The Giribawa Glass Manufacturing Project is shedding light on this fascinating aspect of Sri Lanka's history.

Located near Giribawa village in the North Western Province, the site—nicknamed ‘Pabalugala’ or the "Pearl Rock"—has been known for centuries for its scattered glass beads. These beads hint at the presence of a glassmaking industry dating back to as early as the 7th century! 💎

Since 2022, the Department of Archaeology, Web Info - Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut - German Archaeological Institute (DAI-KAAK), the University of Kelaniya, and CNRS, have joined hands for this remarkable excavation project at Giribawa.

The team discovered remains of furnaces used in glass production, some of which had been damaged by looters. Their aim? To understand the advanced glassmaking techniques of ancient Sri Lankans and their role in South Asia's trade networks. 🌐🔥

The site is thought to have been active between the 7th and 11th centuries, during which time it may have supplied glass beads to important trade hubs like Anuradhapura and Kuchchaveli, as well as ports on the West Coast such as Pomparippu and Mantai. 🛥️📜

Through cutting-edge techniques such as radiocarbon dating, digital photography, and chemical analysis, the project aims to trace the history and significance of these ancient glass beads—some of which have even been found in places as far away as Egypt and Tanzania! 🌍🧳

This discovery not only enhances our understanding of ancient glass-making technology but also provides valuable insights into the cultural and trade exchanges that shaped Sri Lanka and the broader South Asian region. 🌟

Stay tuned later in the year for updates from Giribawa, one of the most important ancient glassmaking sites in South Asia! 🔍
