Sri Lankaโs age-old tradition of Kithul Madeema, the customary technique of extracting sap from the kithul palm, has been recognized by UNESCO and placed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
Locally referred to as Kithul Madeema or Kithul Kapeema, this practice is strongly tied to life in rural Sri Lankan communities. It centers on drawing sap from the Caryota urens tree - commonly known as the kithul palm - which grows in both forested areas and home gardens.
