Sigiriya

The site dates back to the 5th century CE when King Kashyapa I (477-495 CE) chose this dramatic location for his royal citadel. According to historical accounts, Kashyapa built his palace complex on top of the rock after seizing the throne from his father and fearing retaliation from his half-brother, the rightful heir.

Sigiriya was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, recognized for its outstanding universal value as an ancient urban planning achievement and artistic masterpiece. The site demonstrates advanced knowledge of hydraulic engineering, urban planning, and artistic achievement from over 1,500 years ago.The combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and artistic achievement makes Sigiriya one of Sri Lanka's most visited tourist destinations and a testament to ancient Sri Lankan civilization.
