There’s a reason “literary travel” has taken over our Instagram feeds - the right story doesn’t just tell you about a place, it offers you a way in. And Sri Lanka has no shortage of writers ready to show you the real stories.

We’re firm believers that the best trips start with a good book. So we picked six - one for the hills, one for the ruins, one for the coast, one for the north, and two for Colombo - a place that really is a tale of two cities.

Forget curry. In Ladakh, dinner looks nothing like the India you think you know.

Rice doesn't grow and mangoes don't ripen 11,500ft. So Ladakhi cuisine tells a different story - one of Tibetan Buddhist tradition, centuries of Silk Road trade, and a landscape that leaves no room for waste.

Steaming bowls of thukpa to fight the cold. Momos filled with whatever the season brings. Dried apricots from trees that somehow thrive in a high-altitude desert. Butter tea, salted not sweetened, poured again and again as a mark of hospitality (top tip: leave a little in your cup when you’re full).

This isn't fusion food or a tourist menu - it's what people have eaten here for hundreds of years, and it tells the story of the region and its people far better than a history book.

Think you’ve left it too late to soak up some summer sun in Sri Lanka? Think again…

If you caught our last post, you’ll already know that the school summer holidays are a brilliant time to visit Sri Lanka. While the south-west coast catches its rains, the whole east coast - from Trincomalee down to Arugam Bay - comes into its own, with calm seas, blue skies and some of the best beach weather of the year. Add in quieter cultural sites, lush green landscapes inland, and it’s easy to see why summer is one of our favourite Sri Lankan seasons.

And if you’re planning around the school holidays, you’re not too late - swipe through for a few of our favourite hotels that still have availability for summer 2026, from boutique villas to rustic lodges.

Why we love it: This 18-room boutique gem was once a merchant’s house, and it still has that lived-in, storied charm - think handmade floor tiles, Portuguese-heritage interiors and cosy-meets-chic furnishings throughout.

Tucked right inside the historic Galle Fort walls, it’s one of the best-located stays in the area (everything’s an easy stroll away) and there’s now a brand new pool too, which is a real luxury within the fort. Add in the buzzy Church Street Social bar & restaurant out front, and you’ve got one of the most atmospheric boutique boltholes in Sri Lanka.

Family rooms and a kids’ menu mean it works brilliantly for a multi-gen trip too.

Why we love it: Set across 35 acres of former rice terraces in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, this 30-villa resort was designed by Channa Dasawatte (a student of the legendary Geoffrey Bawa) as a tribute to the ancient water gardens once found here - and with views over Sigiriya Rock Fortress, it’s about as memorable a backdrop as a family holiday gets.

Did the summer holidays catch up with you too? Good news... it's not too late to escape for July and August, if you pick your destination carefully.

While everyone else is fighting for sunbeds in the Med, Sri Lanka's east coast is quietly having its best weather of the year. From now to September, Passikudah, Kalkudah and Trincomalee are enjoying long, bright days and even longer beaches, with white sands and warm, gentle waters that are just perfect for younger travellers.

Prefer more energy? The south coast can still be great through July and August - just pick a hotel with a pool as backup if the sea gets lively, and enjoy the buzzing beach bars and restaurant scene around Ahangama and Hiriketiya in the evenings.

If you like to keep the learning going through the holidays, the ancient cultural sites bring history alive with the 5th century Sigiriya, while budding David Attenboroughs may just spot elusive leopard and sloth bear in national parks like Wilpattu and Yala (while Yala can be busy in the school holidays, we know which blocks to head to for quieter tracks).

The so-called green season isn't a compromise - it's the insider's Sri Lanka. Fewer crowds, good availability in our favourite properties and a year-round climate that means there's always an area at its best.

Sri Lanka at Christmas fills up fast - most of our favourite hotels are booked a year in advance. But we checked in with some of our favourites - and a handful of rooms are still up for grabs.

These aren’t hotels we picked off a list. They’re the ones our team returns to again and again, in the spots that make a trip feel less like a holiday and more like somewhere you belong for a while.
