🚆 Sri Lanka Railways – Phased Resumption Plan After Extreme Weather 🇱🇰
Following recent extreme weather events, Sri Lanka Railways has launched a phased disaster recovery programme to safely restore train operations across the island.
🔧 Current Status
✅️ 595 km of track restored (around 40%)
🚆 Train services currently operating up to:
• Main Line – Rambukkana
• Northern Line – Maho
• Puttalam Line – Nattandiya
• Coastal Line – Beliatta
• Kelani Valley Line – Awissawella
• Trincomalee Line – Goods trains only
🛠 Recovery Approach
1️⃣ Restoration – Resume services quickly
2️⃣ Rehabilitation – Strengthen damaged sections
3️⃣ Reconstruction – Build disaster-resilient infrastructure
📅 Track Availability Targets
• 09 Dec 2025 – 56%
• 01 Jan 2026 – 80%
• 01 Feb 2026 – 83%+
📍 Key Milestones (Jan–Feb 2026)
• Northern, Puttalam, Batticaloa & Trincomalee lines fully reopened
• Talaimannar Line reopened by 01 Feb 2026
• Tourist train service planned between Badulla–Ambewela (subject to approval)
⚠️ Damage includes landslides, flooding, bridge and track damage across multiple lines.
💰 Estimated Costs
• Total damage: Rs. 341 billion
• Rehabilitation & reconstruction: Rs. 128 billion
