You can only request to travel to New Zealand while the border is closed if one of these critical purpose reasons applies to you.

How to request to travel

Partners and dependent children of temporary visa holders
Partners and dependent children of temporary visa holders who are currently outside New Zealand may be eligible to travel to New Zealand under this border exception category. The border exception is for these three groups:

Partners and dependent children who held a visa for New Zealand but were unable to join their partner or parent in New Zealand before the border closed.
Partners and dependent children of workers employed in critical health services.
Partners and dependent children of highly-skilled workers.
NOTE
The partner or dependent child must submit the request to travel. You must select the correct reason for travel. If you select the wrong reason for travel your request may be declined.

Dependent children (temporary entry visa)

You may need to meet a minimum income level to support your dependent child’s visa application.

Bringing family if you have a work visa

Partners and dependent children who held a visa before the border closure
If you are eligible under this category the 'reason for travel' you should select in your request to travel is:

Partner or dependent child with a visa based on their relationship to a temporary visa holder in New Zealand.
To be eligible to enter New Zealand partners or dependent children outside of New Zealand must:

Hold a current visa based on their relationship to the person in New Zealand, or
have held a valid visa on 19 March 2020 but it has now expired because they were unable to enter New Zealand by the arrival date printed on their visa label.

You may be able to travel to New Zealand while the border is closed if we consider you have a critical purpose to travel.
