Batalegala Rock — also called *Bible Rock* or *Bathalegala* — is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic hiking spots in the Kegalle District.
1. What it is
A massive granite rock with a flat, table-top summit. It rises about 798 m / 2,618 ft above sea level. From the Colombo-Kandy road near Kadugannawa, it looks like an open book — that’s why the British named it “Bible Rock”. From Balana, it even resembles Sigiriya.
2. Location & History
It’s part of the Alagalla Mountain Range on the border of Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces. Historically, the area was a key defense point for the Kandyan Kingdom against Portuguese, Dutch, and British invasions. Balana Pass nearby was a strategic rock fortress.
The name “Batalegala” comes from Sinhala folklore: _Bata_ = rice, _le_ = blood, _gala_ = rock. Legend says a pot of rice turned blood-red here. 8e9a

It’s close to Colombo and Kandy, scenic, and less crowded than Sigiriya. Great for adventure travelers, photographers, and nature lovers. The hike is doable for most fit travelers and the views are worth it
