Udawalawe National Park, the sixth largest animal sanctuary of Sri Lanka is located 180 km from Colombo in south-central sector of the island. Udawalawe National Park was establish in the year 1972, with the objective of protecting the catchment area of Udawalawe reservoir, which provides water for agriculture.
Wildlife at Udawalawe National Park🐘🐏🐂
Udawalawe National Park is home to 184 species of birds (33 of which are migratory), 94 kinds of plants, 21 fish, 12 amphibians, 33 reptiles, 43 mammals, and 135 species of butterflies, in addition to its amazing population of Asian elephants which is one of the best national parks for wildlife tour in Sri Lanka and bird watching tours in Sri Lanka. The main attraction of the park is the Water Buffalo, Wildboar, Spotted Deer, Sambur Deer, Jackal, Samber, Black-naped hare, mongooses, bandicoots, foxes, as the endemic Toque Macaque and Gray Langers. Sighting a Leopard and other smaller cats like Fishing cat & Jungle cat would be a bonus. Udawalawe is undoubtedly the best place in Sri Lanka to see wild Asian Elephants throughout the year: there are about 500 elephants in the park and they often roam in herds of up to 100th. National Park is unique in terms of consistency in numbers of elephants roaming the park: it has no seasonal variation in herds of elephants. The best hours to visit the park are in the mornings and evenings.

The dry season in the region is the best time to visit Udawalawe, which falls between the months of May and September. In addition, the neighboring areas of Udawalawe are brimming with additional notable attractions and tourist spots. Situated in the Southern Province, close to Hambantota, The Bundala National Park considered the most important birding destination in Sri Lanka was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and thereafter advanced to a National Park in 1993. It is located 251 km southeast of the capital city of Colombo, and can be reached from various tourist destinations around the country. For those travelling from Colombo the route is via Galle, Matara and Hambantota and from Kandy via Badulla. The climate at Bundala is hot and dry at most times, with average temperatures at 27 degrees Celsius during the months of May to September, with plenty of migratory birds arriving between September and March.

The park is spread out on 6,218 hectares consists of a striking landscape made up of a mix of thorny scrublands, marshes, lagoons, waterways and dunes making it an inviting destination for thousands of migratory birds, some long distant migrants flying all the way from Euro Asian destinations to winter in the park. Matale is a major city in the central province, it is the administrative capital and most urbanized, populated city of the Matale District. Matale is the second largest urban and populated city of central, Sri Lanka after Kandy. It is mentioned that “Mahatala” became as Matale because it is placed in a valley and also the King Gajaba invaded “Soli Rata” and brought and settled 12,000 peoples in here it has become as Matale. It is located at the heart of the, central hills of the island and lies in a broad, green fertile valley at an elevation of 364 m above sea level. The district is home to the Knuckles Mountain range, which is considered as a national heritage due to its rich biodiversity and geographical characteristics. Laggala in the eastern boundary is renowned for the three mountain ranges that run parallel to each other, along with the ‘Small World’s End’ located in Pitawala for its bird’s-eye view into the valley below. Matara
Matara is a city on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, 160 km from Colombo. It is one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka. In ancient times it was called "Mahathota". It originated due to the big way of crossing the river Nilvala. The west part of the district is in the Wet Zone and the remains are in the Dry Zone. The economy is mainly based on Tea, Rubber, Coconut, Paddy cultivation and fishing industry. Matara was under the Portuguese and the Dutch rule in the 16th and 18th century respectively and the fort located at the city center was built by the Dutch. It was one of the most important forts for the Dutch as a commanding base in the southern maritime provinces and for certain inland forts. Galle, Matara offers a fine tropical destination with gorgeous sandy beaches and several other attractions such as the Dutch rampart and Veherahena Temple in south Sri Lanka.

Kandy is the last Royal Kingdom of Sri Lanka with picturesque landscape surrounded by beautiful mountains located in the central part of the island positioned 1,600 feet above the MSL- Mean Sea Level. Kandy Sri Lanka is well known with the Sacred Tooth relic Temple which is most venerated Buddhist Temple and The Royal Botanic Gardens with more that 4,000 labeled species of flora and also Kandy is a “Planned City” during British colonial period of Ceylon. Considering these facts UNESCO declared Kandy as a UNESCO World Heritage. Today Kandy is the second most famous city of Sri Lanka with a total area of 1,940 SQ KM and major tourist attraction. Culturally, Kandy plays a vital role with the mix cultures of Sinhala & Tamil communities. Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic was built within the royal palace complex which houses the only surviving relic of Buddha.
During the month of August Kandy becomes highly crowded due to the Kandy Esala Perehera which is hosted as an annual tradition of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. It usually attracts a large number of local and foreign tourists who value tradition, customs and Buddhist heritage. This egregious night parade stalks more than 50 elephants along with colorful kandyan dancers and drummers.
