The Sri Lankan Whistling Thrush, also known as the අරංගයා in Sinhala. One of the rarest and most secretive endemic birds of Sri Lanka. It is usually found in the cool, shaded forests and streams of the central highlands, especially in places like Horton Plains National Park. This bird is famous for its beautiful whistling calls, often heard early in the morning near forest streams.

The male Sri Lankan Whistling Thrush is mostly dark blue-black with a glossy appearance. In good light, the bright electric-blue patches on the shoulders and forehead become very visible, making the male look stunning. Females are quite different in appearance. They are mainly brown with dull bluish tones and have a more subtle, less colorful look compared to the males. Females are also slightly smaller and better camouflaged in the forest understory.

These birds are shy and difficult to photograph because they prefer dense forest habitats and usually stay close to rocky streams. They feed on insects, small frogs, and other tiny creatures found near water. Due to habitat loss and their limited range, the Sri Lankan Whistling Thrush is considered a vulnerable species and is highly valued among birdwatchers and wildlife photographers visiting Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill is an endemic bird of Sri Lanka, found mainly in forests, woodlands, gardens, and dry-zone habitats. With its distinctive long bill, grey plumage, and striking black-and-white markings, it is a beautiful and fascinating species to observe and photograph. It is also known for its unique nesting behaviour, where the female seals herself inside a tree cavity while the male brings food to her and the chicks.

Another successful full day safari organized by Wildlife Safari Sri Lanka for S. Thomas' Preparatory School Kollupitiya. 🐘

We arranged 7 safari jeeps for their workshop, including food for everyone. They had an amazing time and experienced some incredible wildlife in Wilpattu National Park.
