Sinharaja is a tropical rainforest located in southwest Sri Lanka. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity hotspot, known for its rich and diverse flora and fauna. The forest covers an area of about 11,187 hectares and is home to a large number of endemic species, including birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.
The Sinharaja forest is believed to be one of the few remaining patches of undisturbed lowland rainforest in Sri Lanka. It is also considered a vital watershed for many of the country's major rivers and streams. The forest has a dense canopy, with trees reaching up to 45 meters in height. The understory is also rich in plant life, with many species of ferns, orchids, and other epiphytes growing on the trunks and branches of the trees.
Sinharaja is a popular destination for eco-tourists and nature lovers, who can explore the forest on foot along a network of trails. Visitors can spot many rare and endangered species, including the Sri Lankan blue magpie, the Sri Lankan junglefowl, the green pit viper, and the hump-nosed lizard. The forest is also home to several research stations, where scientists study the ecology and biology of the area.
