Meet Sri Lanka's Marine Turtles:
1. Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas): Named for the greenish hue of their cartilage and fat, these herbivores primarily feast on seagrasses and algae. Their grazing helps maintain healthy seagrass beds, vital for other marine life.
2. Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea): The largest of all sea turtles, leatherbacks can weigh up to 900 kg. Unlike other turtles, they have a distinctive leathery shell and primarily consume jellyfish, aiding in controlling jellyfish populations.
3. Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata): Recognizable by their pointed beaks and beautifully patterned shells, hawksbills predominantly feed on sponges, contributing to the health and diversity of coral reefs.
4. Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta): With robust jaws, loggerheads crush hard-shelled prey like crabs and mollusks. Their nesting sites are scattered along Sri Lanka's coastline.
5. Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea): Known for their mass nesting called "arribada," where thousands come ashore simultaneously, Olive Ridleys are the smallest of the sea turtles and are primarily carnivorous, feeding on a variety of invertebrates.
Conservation Efforts in Sri Lanka:
Despite their long history, marine turtles face numerous threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and accidental capture in fishing gear.
