Liberia Passport Ranking and Visa Access:
As of 2025, the Liberian passport ranks 92nd globally in terms of travel freedom. This ranking is based on the number of destinations accessible to Liberian passport holders without requiring a traditional visa.
Currently, Liberians can travel to:
• 25 countries visa-free
• 20 countries with visa on arrival
• 1 destination via electronic travel authorization (eTA).
In total, Liberians can access 46 destinations without a standard visa. However, there are still 183 countries that require either a physical visa or an electronic visa (eVisa) for Liberian citizens.
About the Republic of Liberia:
Liberia is a West African nation bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, and the North Atlantic Ocean. The country is divided into 15 counties, with Montserrado, Nimba, B**g, and Lofa being among the most significant. Liberia covers an area of 111,369 square kilometers, making it the 39th largest country in Africa.
The climate is tropical, characterized by hot, humid conditions and heavy rainfall. The terrain is mostly flat, gradually rising to low mountains in the northeast.
In 2025, Liberia’s population exceeds 5.67 million, with Monrovia as the capital and largest city. Other key cities include Gbarnga, Buchanan, and Ganta.
The main international gateway is Roberts International Airport (ROB), handling around 228,000 passengers annually and offering connections to various African and European destinations.
Culture, Language, and Governance:
Liberian culture is deeply influenced by Americo-Liberians, descendants of freed African-Americans from the southern United States. Christianity, particularly Catholicism, is the dominant religion, practiced by approximately 85% of the population.
English is the official language, though more than 20 indigenous dialects are spoken throughout the country. The legal system is a blend of common law and customary law, and the government operates as a presidential republic, currently led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
Economy and Development:
Liberia’s currency is the Liberian Dollar (LRD), with an exchange rate of approximately LRD 200.45 to 1 USD. The country has an open but struggling economy, heavily reliant on foreign aid. Its GDP stands at roughly $4.24 billion, ranking it 161st globally and 37th out of 47 in Sub-Saharan Africa. The per capita income is around $907.64 USD.
Key exports include rubber, timber, cocoa, iron ore, palm oil, diamonds, and gold. The government actively promotes foreign investment in sectors such as gold mining, oil exploration, and timber production, with palm oil being an emerging area of growth.
Tourism Potential:
Although still developing as a tourist destination, Liberia brands itself as “The Gateway for Tourism.” Tourist arrivals remain low, mostly consisting of visitors from neighboring African countries and the United States. Key attractions include:
• Monrovia (the capital)
• Sapo National Park
• Robertsport
• Buchanan
• Gbarnga
• Harbel
• Kakata
• Greenville
Liberia’s natural beauty and cultural history present opportunities for growth in the tourism sector, with potential for eco-tourism and heritage tourism development.
