I LOVE balconies! It's not the architectural element that fascinates me, but that merge of private yet public space and nowhere is it more evident than in Athens. Balconies seem to play so many different roles in Athenian lives. Remember to lift up your eyes when wandering the city ;)

When in Athens, make sure to walk by this wonder from 1994 - countless sheets of glass piled on top of each other create this striking giant! Costas Varotsos spent 6 years to complete this 12m-high sculpture. Didn't get to see it at night, but they say it's even more sticking after dark..

is one of the two ports on . Sightseeing wise it doesn't have much, but there is a beach, beautiful blue water with boats, cute houses and some real nice places for food and drinks. A good place to say farewell to the island!

Amorgos got a Chora too! Only this one is hidden in the mountains. Tiny, authentic and thus very atmospheric. I can see why my German Amorgos expert told me I had to see it for myself :)

The monastery of is what pops up when you google island. So I googled more and decided why bother searching for a bus when it's only a 5km walk from where I live! And so I walked what must have been a million steps up and down, stones and gravel.. I hope my knees will forgive me, as I didn't have the patience to wait for the return bus and walked all the way back too :D

And so the Monastery:

πŸ₯Ύ Its 300 meters above the sea level right in a giant rock (you climb down..a lot, and then climb up, not as much though, but enough).
πŸ“– Was constructed 812-813 AD
⛏ Measures 5 meters in width, 40 meters and length and 8 stories high
🍸 If you take the right steps, leads you to a seating room where monks offer visitors Psimeni - a drink of raki with honey, cinnamon and clove and stunning views through the windowns

A few things to know once there:

πŸ“· No photos are allowed inside
πŸ‘• There is a dress code to enter - long trousers for men, and long skirts for women, shoulders must be covered too (a big beach scarf on shorts did the skirt part for me :) )
πŸ‘› There is no entry fee

When a person who's been traveling to Greece for 40 years tells you island is their favourite island, you are sure that these 4 hours on yet another ferry are well worth it!

The trip includes:
🌊 Some seriously gorgeous blue harbours
πŸ›³ A really old ferry, repaired every year and still roaring
🌬Even on a sunny calm day the final leg of the trip, just after Koufonisia, gets bumpy. Have a jacket and some pants, the wind can get very cold, and of course, skip a heavier meal if big waves make your stomach turn :D

PS. The very same solo german traveler has visited Amorgos island some 30 times. 'Just 3 nights?' she said. 'You better make the most out of it!'. And she wrote down a smart and efficient way to explore the island πŸ‘

Just on the outskirts of - a white small Theologaki chapel. I saw it from afar and thought - now that ought to make for a nice walk, and it surely did. What a tiny marvel sheltered by a giant rock.
