Many rivers are dry here in Morocco, officially in drought Morocco has not had rain in some parts for more than 2 years
Many dams have very low water levels and many oases are drying up

Getting water in the desert in the 14th century. The water systems in this area are known as qanats or khettaras. These are ancient underground water channels designed to transport water without active pumping.
The qanats in this area date back to 14th century and provided water for towns and villages for several centuries. The qanat system is handmade using very simple tools and resources. Every family in the village must dedicate a male member to help in the building of the qanats. This was a job for the men of the village not the women. The women did work outside in the fields, with the animals and also bringing in the water but not helping in the building work. If a family does not help in the building then they don’t get a share in the water once the system is up and running. If a family has no male member or their men aren’t able to work then the family must pay for someone else to do their share. The building of the qanats is overseen by a supervisor, called Cheikh Elghaba. This man is also responsible for distributing the water so that everyone gets their fair share. He is paid by the tribe just like in every small community and village in the Sahara. These qanats are no longer working, now they are mainly used as tourist stops for visitors that are heading to Merzouga camel trekking and to see the sunset over the dunes.
