Aït Ben Haddou is one of Morocco’s most famous fortified villages, or “ksar,” located on the ancient caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. The site was first fortified in the 11th century during the Almoravid period and became an important stop for traders carrying gold, salt, spices, and other goods across the desert.

Most of the mud-brick kasbahs you see today date from the 17th century. Built from clay, straw, and wood, the village is a beautiful example of traditional Amazigh architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Today, Aït Ben Haddou is also famous as a filming location for movies and series such as Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones.
