Site Touristique Sakaviro

Site Touristique Sakaviro Sakaviro Community Reserve is a local park featuring trails, lemurs and other endemic flora and fauna along with camping and historical sites.

The community of Sakaviro is a small agricultural village located just south of Ambalavao off of RN7. Home to a stand of old-growth forest nestled under the famous Apella Matory (Sleeping Lady) rock formation, the trails in Sakaviro Community Park date back to 1888 when it was used as a safe shelter for local kings during French colonization. Bunkers, tombs and ceremonial formations are still vis

ible within the park. A valuable habitat for ring-tailed lemurs, chameleons, numerous bird species and a diverse forest ecosystem of endemic plants, insects and small animals the community has committed to conserving the forest and reforesting 40+ acres of once-forested land. The nearby river offers opportunities for canoeing and camping, as well as the chance to view crocodiles during the hot months. Proceeds from visitors go to park maintenance and reforestation efforts and help the local community gain independence from environmentally strenuous subsistence agriculture and integrate into the new conservation-tourism economy.
