Union Day in Myanmar is a public holiday that comes on every February 12th to commemorate the passage of the Panglong Agreement in 1947, which gave the country full independence from Great Britain after more than 100 years of colonial rule.
On February 12, 1947, Aung San and leaders from national groups across the country signed the "Panglong Agreement." That action unified Burma and demanded that the British government restore independence to all of Burma. But Aung San did not live to see it: he was assassinated on July 19, 1947, before the country officially became independent on January 4, 1948.
Five days before Union Day, an annual relay of the Union flag begins. A ceremony to mark the start of the relay is held at City Hall. The flag is carried through 45 townships before arriving at People's Square on Pyay Road for a Union Day ceremony.

The Mandalay Palace located in Mandalay, Myanmar, is the last royal palace of the last Burmese monarchy. When King Mindon Min founded Mandalay in 1857 he ordered construction of a new Royal Palace called the Mya Nan San Kyaw. During World War II, the palace citadel was turned into a supply depot by the Japanese and was carelessly burnt to the ground by Allied bombing. Only the royal mint and the watch tower survived.

Reconstruction of the palace began in 1989, initiated by the Department of Archaeology.

Holy Inle Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda festival is starting today!

The Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival will be celebrated for total 18 days, until 16th October 2019.
During the festival, four of the five gilded Phaung Daw Oo Buddha images are placed on the Royal Karaweik barge to tour around the lake, from village to village. The elaborately decorated barge is striking on the water and with green mountain ranges behind. It is often accompanied by many boats, making an impressive procession.

One of the highlights of the festival is the exhilarating boat races between teams representing villages. The boats are paddled using the skillful, one-legged rowing technique, teamed up by about 46 rowers and above 100 rowers. In the morning of 15th October, the Buddha images will arrive at Innpawkhone Village.
