From Philadelphia to Ulaanbaatar!

We had the pleasure of welcoming students and faculty from the University of Pennsylvania as part of their academic visit to Mongolia.

One of the highlights of the day was joining a traditional Mongolian cooking lesson, where students learned how to make huushuur. Sharing food, stories, and experiences created meaningful connections that extended far beyond the classroom.

Our first Felt City Tours monthly tour of the 2026 season is here!

Join us on May 17th for a special photowalk under the theme “Resilience & Creativity.” Together, we will explore the ger areas through stories, images, and everyday moments that reflect the creativity and resilience of the community.

The experience will also include a guest speaker session with our community member Ts. Bilgee, who has lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years. Through his experiences as a father, metal welder, and entrepreneur, we will reflect on resilience, creativity, and everyday life in the ger areas.

Grab your phone or camera and join our community-based experiences and discover Ulaanbaatar through the voices and lives of the people who shape it!

Walking the Felt City Tours route, our fellows explored the neighborhoods, met the local hosts, and saw how the stories we talk about actually exist in everyday life.

They spent time with our host Davaajargal learning the steps of Mongolian traditional paper cutting, focusing on the small details, and understanding the patience and care behind the craft. With Sambuu, they played traditional knuckle bone games, sharing laughter, learning the rules, and connecting through something simple but familiar.

These moments were a way to spend time with local community members, sharing time to connect, and learning through doing.

Our Felt City Fellowship 2026 Cohort has officially kicked off!

We started the program at the Ulaanbaatar City Museum, where we explored the city’s history, the context of ger areas, and set the foundations for the fellowship.

Fellows joined insightful discussions led by our guest speakers, exploring the differences between community-based tourism and traditional tourism, why CBT matters, and what it means in practice through their own experiences.

From storytelling and interpretation to asking ourselves “What do I care about? What do I want to protect?”, the conversations pushed us to think more deeply about the role we play in our culture and history.

As one fellow shared, “There are no words strong enough to fully describe the beauty of Mongolia.” Another reflected on the importance of capturing what moves people, something that applies not only to tourism, but to life and work as well.

Meet the mentors of the Felt City Fellowship!

This program brings together practitioners from community engagement, research, cultural heritage, travel design, and program development to guide young participants through a structured journey of learning, field experience, and professional growth. Each mentor contributes practical expertise grounded in real projects and community work in Ulaanbaatar and beyond.

Throughout the program, we will also be welcoming guest facilitators, industry speakers, and collaborators who will share diverse perspectives and hands-on insights.

Skills and relationships developed through the youth fellowship program can be applied in a wide variety of professional arenas.

After completing the fellowship, fellows will be better prepared to apply themselves to the following opportunities:

- Working as a trainer for Felt City Tours
- Working or volunteering with NGOs and community organizations
- Tourism, hospitality, tourism, and cultural exchange programs
- Youth leadership and community development opportunities
- Jobs or internships that require experience working with international visitors
- Future trainings, scholarships, or programs that prioritize real-world experience
- Academic pathways focused on, but not limited to, development, sustainability, and education

Fellows gain confidence, communication skills, and professional habits that transfer to many fields. The focus is not just tourism; it’s learning how to represent community clearly, responsibly, and professionally in any setting.
