From NASA satellites to the ancient North Star. 🌌✨

In 1995, my father came to Mongolia to help them look to the skies for weather monitoring. Thirty years later, we stood together under that same "Eternal Sky" to trace the legends of the Mongol Empire.

Whether we were standing at the birthplace of an empire at Blue Lake or watching Starlink satellites zoom over traditional gers, this trip was a reminder that while technology changes, the stars remain our constant guides. 🐎🛰️

The latest chapter of "Stories from the Steppe" is now live.

From concrete canyons to the infinite Taiga. 🌲

Living in a vertical world like Hong Kong, you get used to life governed by clocks and subway chimes. But stepping into Mongolia felt like entering a different dimension.

In the Taiga, the "schedule" is set by the seasons, the wildlife, and the ancient pulse of the land. It’s a masterclass in how life should be lived: in total harmony with nature. I’ve left a piece of my heart in the larch trees, but I’m bringing back a new understanding of what it means to be truly "home."

Introducing: Stories from the Steppe 🐎✨

We are so excited to launch a new series on our blog featuring the voices of the riders, adventurers, and friends who have journeyed with us. We’re calling it Stories from the Steppe.

Our first entry comes from a traveler who has returned to Mongolia three times. Why? Because in a world of fences and gates, the Mongolian steppe offers a "singular universe" where you can ride the bravest horses nature ever created.

Beyond the vast landscapes and the "travel back in time" feel, she discovered the best-kept secret of Mongolia: its people.

Welcome to our new series, Stories from the Steppe. At Boojum Expeditions, we’ve always believed that the true magic of Mongolia isn’t found in brochures, but in the hearts of those who ride its trails. For our first entry, a three-time traveler shares why this land feels less like a destination...

Today is Bituun. Bituun is the last day of the old year according to the lunar calendar (the 30th day of the final winter month). For Mongolians, it is the most important day of preparation to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one.
1. Meaning: The word "Bituun" means "to close" or "full/hidden," referring to the night when the moon is completely dark and invisible. It symbolizes the end of one cycle and the cleansing of the "dust" (negativity), debts, and misunderstandings of the past year.
2. Main Rituals
Grand Cleaning: Families perform a deep cleaning of their homes. It is believed that a clean home leads to a clean mind and spirit for the coming year.
Settling Debts: It is tradition to return borrowed items and pay off all financial debts to start the new year with a "clean slate."
The Altar: The family altar is decorated with traditional offerings, and butter lamps (zul) and incense are lit. Three pieces of ice are often placed on the door lintel for the deity Lham Burhan’s horse to drink.
3. Bitüüleg (The Feast)
On Bituun evening, families prepare an abundance of food and aim to eat until they are completely full. This feast is called "Bitüüleh."
Traditional Dishes: The main course consists of Buuz (steamed dumplings) and Bansh (boiled dumplings). Eating Bansh is a symbol of becoming wealthy.
The Mutton: A large cut of mutton, usually the Uuts (lower back) or Dal Durvun Ondor (shoulder and ribs), is served alongside towers of traditional cookies (Heviin boov).
Milk Tea: Fresh salty milk tea is brewed, and the first "share" is offered to the earth and sky.
