5:00 AM in the Mongolian steppe feels different from anywhere else.

The sky is still dark, and the air carries the cold of the night. There are no alarms, no city sounds only the quiet movement of animals beginning to wake.

Inside the ger, the day starts before the sun rises. A fire is lit, water is set to boil, and the first signs of life come not from people, but from the herd outside.

In spring, this is the most demanding time of year. Many animals give birth during the night, especially when the weather turns harsh wind, sudden cold, or even late snow.

By the early hours, the family is already outside, moving through the dim light, checking on the animals. Newborns are found, and the weakest are carefully carried to warmth, giving them a better chance to survive.

As the sky slowly begins to brighten, the work continues milking, preparing the herd, and getting ready to move toward fresh pasture.

By the time the sun finally rises over the steppe, much of the morningโ€™s work is already done.

In Mongolia, 5:00 AM is not the beginning of the day it is simply a continuation of it.
