3TE116UM 🇲🇳
A massive heavy container train, powered by a triple-headed 2TE116UM locomotive consist, climbs the gradient toward Khonkhor Pass under the bright spring sun. Captured on a crystal-clear morning along the central stretch of the Trans-Mongolian Railway, this moment showcases the raw power and endurance of the 2TE116UM in multiple-unit formation, built for the steep gradients and tough terrain of Mongolia.

📍 Photographed during our recent group tour with Japanese railfans, this scene is a perfect example of heavy-haul railroading at its finest in the heart of Central Asia.

One train, 4 different compositions
The same train passed within 5 minutes on the pass — captured from a single location, but in 4 different angles and under varying light conditions 📷 A monstrous 6000tn freight iron-ore train, hauled by a 2TE25KM at the front and banked by 2ZAGAL locomotives, climbed uphill toward Bumbat Pass on a very uncomfortable spring morning 🌨

International Train No. 4: Moscow – Ulaanbaatar – Beijing 🇷🇺🇲🇳🇨🇳
On a beautiful summer morning, one of the world's longest-distance trains—Chinese National Railway’s K4 Trans-Siberian Express—departs from Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, crossing a bridge over the Tuul River. Sadly, since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020, these international express trains have yet to resume service.
