Birgu or Vittoriosa is a very old locality in the south of the island of Malta, probably the oldest and the richest in the history of the maltese islands.

Birgu was already inhabited long before the year 216 BC when Rome occupied the maltese islands.. The name Birgu was derived from Borgo, il Borgo del Castello, that is a suburb guarded the castle named St. Angelo at the tip of this promontory dominating the Grand Harbour. Vittoriosa means the victorious city acclaimed by the Grand Master La Vallette after the success which it achieved during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.
