We’re starting a spotlight series on our team, and this week we’re featuring Jay, our co-founder and certified lead guide.

Jay loves hiking to waterfalls and majestic mountains, and has a passion for photography and videography. More importantly, he shows heart and compassion in every moment.

Mauritius Adventours would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Hugo, the young 20 year old German tourist who tragically lost his life on Le Morne mountain on Tuesday August 12, 2025 (afternoon). Our team and the wider hiking community are in mourning.

One of our guides, Jay (also known as Jai Raj) was coming down Le Morne shortly after the incident occurred. Accompanied by Luna LM, our Austrian client who coincidentally spoke both German and Chinese, they did their best to facilitate communication and provide emotional support to the distraught parents and another tourist who had located the victim.

We are sharing below accurate information in the hope of preventing further misunderstandings and to support ongoing discussions about hiking safety in Mauritius.

Below is Jay’s account about the incident:

“I was there yesterday and arrived about 20-30mins after the incident as I was descending the mountain with an Austrian lady and her family. Some facts worth mentioning to avoid misunderstandings as false information is circulating on Facebook since yesterday - like the tourist being French instead of German, him being a “her” according to L’Express, and him falling over 100 metres - according to Radio One - when it was maybe 50 metres or less.

1 - The man who died was a 20yr old tourist from Germany 🇩🇪

2 - He had gone up to the cross alone, leaving his parents behind at the steep section of Le Morne Mountain as they weren’t wearing hiking shoes and not comfortable with continuing up the mountain.

3 - His parents said that he messaged them at 1:30pm to let them know that he was on his way down but never made it back.

4 - A brave Chinese tourist was informed that someone had fallen and fought his way through dense bushes on steep terrain to see if he could help him but found him unresponsive and bleeding out of his ears. He showed us a photo of where he had found the German tourist and it was evident that he had been seriously hurt.

5 - Reports that he fell over 100 metres are exaggerated as the Chinese tourist definitely did not descend that height. I reckon it was less than 50 metres but even that is a fall most people would not survive if you know how high 50 metres is.

6 - Luna (an Austrian tourist of Chinese descent), assisted in interpreting for the distraught German father and the Chinese tourist who spoke no English to establish what had happened as there was talk about a tourist who had fallen and another person who was missing - which in the end turned out to be the same person.

7- We asked the Chinese tourist to remain where he was on the mountain and wait for the rescue team as he was the only person who had located where the German tourist had fallen.

8 - We tried to comfort the worried German mother but we could not do much after her husband called her to inform her that their son had died (he had gone with the Chinese tourist to see where their son had fallen)

9 - I escorted her almost all the way to the benches around the halfway mark and carried her backpack but decided to give her space to grieve.

10 - The 20yr old German tourist fell before or around 2pm. I’ve included a cropped photo of the shoes he was wearing - definitely not recommended for hiking/climbing and possibly the reason he slipped.

11 - One person saw the incident and reported it to the authorities but nobody knows the identity of that person. Only 1 person died. I’m not sure who are the 2 people who got injured (maybe members of the rescue team?) as the German tourist was alone when he fell. Though not reported yet it is likely that he died of a skull fracture from his fall.”

“From start to finish our adventure with Mauritius Adventours has been a 10/10 experience, Jenny replied to our messages so fast and gave us very adequate information before going on our hike. Luckily we had amazing weather and were able to see so much and have a lovely lunch at a local food spot. My favourite part of the hike was the rock pool with all of the fish that we got a chance to feed with a beautiful view, my boyfriends was the waterfalls and the hiking in general but more specifically jumping into the crystal clear waters of a secret waterfall! It was a perfect balance of walking, exploring, adventure and some historic and factual information from our guide Jay from London. Jay was the best guide we have ever had!! He was very knowledgeable about the island and the route we took which really made us feel at ease, not to mention his photo taking skills we have great photos of memory’s we will cherish for a lifetime. Thankyou Jenny and Jay at Mauritius Adventours for such a great experience!!”

Nous avons choisi de visiter le sud « Wild South » avec Mauritius Adventours. Une belle expérience en toute simplicité et fluidité de la commande de la prestation sur leur site internet à sa réalisation. Accompagné de Jenny, notre guide passionnée et attentionnée, nous avons pu découvrir quelques trésors locaux (plages secrètes, piscine naturelle) hors des sentiers battus. Nous recommandons vivement cette excursion avec Mauritius Adventours (avec Jenny serait un plus 🙂 qui fut privative et fortement appréciée…très belle expérience (amitiés de la famille V. de la région parisienne)
