"The one thing all children have in common is their rights. Every child has the right to survive and thrive, to be educated, to be free from violence and abuse, to participate and to be heard.

The United Nation’s Universal Children’s Day was established in 1954 and is celebrated on November 20th each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1990, Universal Children's Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the declaration and the convention on children's rights.

Arrival of the indentured labourers – Monday 02nd November 2015

Each year, the arrival of the indentured labourers in Mauritius is commemorated at a national level on 2nd November at the Aapravasi Ghat site where more than 400,000 indentured labourers took their first steps

on Mauritian soil between 1849 and 1924. After all, the Aapravasi Ghat is the most important indenture site in our country which is intimately linked with the history of the indentured labourers and their descendants.

Their arrival marked the beginning of an influx of some half a million indentured labourers between 1835 and 1910, a migration which had and a profound impact on Mauritian life and culture.

Every civilization has its own set of values, customs and language, which reflects its culture. Mauritius is no exception. We have a ‘language’ of our own – one which binds us all in one single thread; one which requires no formal undertaking while dealing with; one which helps bring home matters utterly alien to us – this one and only language referred to as Creole.
Creole is a language spoken not only in Mauritius but also in many other countries with a slight difference like Seychelles, Reunion, Haiti, Caribbean countries, Jamaica, among others. Creole is the first language of the majority of the population in these countries. It is called L1 (mother tongue).

International Day of the Creole language and culture,
Every year since 1983, October 28 is an opportunity to celebrate the Creole language and culture through the countries and communities that share Creole , more than 10 million people worldwide ...

The wildlife of Mauritius is composed of its flora and fauna. Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean to the east of Madagascar. Due to its isolation, it has a relatively low diversity of wildlife; however, a high proportion of these are endemic species occurring nowhere else in the world. Many of these are now threatened with extinction because of human activities including habitat destruction and the introduction of non-native species. Some have already become extinct, most famously the dodo which disappeared in the 17th century.
