"ޢީދު ކަތިން ބަތް ދުވަހޯ. ޢީދަށްއޮތީ ތިން ދުވަހޯ"

Generally, the ‘Ashiga’ndu’ (community gathering space) is built on the 26th day of Ramadan. It is built on the beach where people can relax, gather for chit-chat, conversations and discussions.

The ‘Ashiga’ndu’ is constructed using Screw pine tree wood or thatch. Men are responsible to build the ‘Ashiga’ndu’, while the cleaning duties are assigned to the women of the island. When women come to clean, they find gifts of kurumba (young coconut) and various drinks placed in the ‘Ashiga’ndu’.

Nowadays, the ‘Ashiga’ndu’ is built on the 27th day of Ramadan.

Here’s the Timelapse of 2014 ‘Ashiga’ndu’.

Back to the sea 🌊

Moving back to the sea after dry docked for repair without the machineries. A tradition that’s still exists in our community.

When a call is made to pull the a dhoani in to the sea, all men gather at the area where the boat is dry docked. This is a perfect example of how this community engage one another. Although this social work is done voluntarily, the boat owner provides a light refreshment to those who helped after completion of the work.

SPICE UP
🌱🧅🧄🌶🥙
Here’s some snaps of ongoing spice mixes (Havaadhu dhevun).
Every year, residents of Maalhos Island, located in the North Ari Atoll, come together in their households to prepare spice paste in preparation for Ramadan.

This tradition is deeply ingrained in our culture. Volunteers from various households unite to assist in making Maldivian Curry Paste, also known as Havaadhu locally.

Common spices used in the preparation of Havaadhu include cumin, coriander, fennel, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and turmeric.

Once the spices are ready, all the volunteers gather at the designated house to contribute to the spice paste-making process. In return, the host provides food and beverages.
