A lagoon, is an area of relatively shallow, quiet water situated in a coastal environment and having access to the sea or the lake but separated from the open marine conditions by a barrier. The barrier may be either a sandy or shingly wave-built feature, or it may be a coral reef.Lagoons are separated from larger bodies of water by sandbars, barrier reefs, coral reefs, or other natural barriers. The word "lagoon" derives from the Italian word laguna, which means "pond" or "lake."

Chia lagoon is the largest lagoon in Malawi with a water surface area of 17 km2. The lagoon supports the livelihood of over 7857 households.According to locals, the 17-square kilometre lagoon was formed at the start of the century after the area experienced some flooding. For generations, the lagoon has provided water for people, animals and agriculture.

Hastings Kamuzu Banda (1898/1906 – 1997) was a significant political figure in Malawi, serving as the country's first president. Born in Kasungu, then part of British Central Africa, his exact birthdate is disputed, often cited as either 1898 or 1906. Banda pursued education in the United States and the United Kingdom, eventually becoming a physician.

In the early 1950s, he became involved in anti-colonial movements. Returning to Malawi in 1958, he played a key role in the push for independence, leading the Nyasaland African Congress, which later became the Malawi Congress Party. Banda was instrumental in the transition from the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland to the independent nation of Malawi in 1964. He became Malawi’s first Prime Minister in 1963 and its President in 1966 when Malawi declared itself a republic.

His rule, lasting until 1994, was marked by authoritarian practices, including the suppression of dissent, but he also focused on developing infrastructure and education. In 1993, facing increasing internal and external pressure, Banda agreed to a referendum which ended his one-party rule, leading to Malawi's first multi-party elections in 1994, in which he was defeated. Banda died in South Africa in 1997. His legacy remains complex, with views varying between his contributions to Malawi's independence and development and his repressive governance style.

The Wildlife Investigators Training Alliance (WITA) and Attorney General Alliance-Africa (AGA-Africa) have donated various law enforcement equipment worth USD28,000 to the Malawi Police Service.

Malawi Police Service Commissioner responsible for research and planning, Happy Mkandawire says the equipment will help the officers to be innovative when dealing with crimes.

AGA- Africa Programs Director Chukukere Oparah says they plan to sign a Memorandum of understanding with the Malawi police service which will see the two working together to curb transnational crimes.
