🏨 Where to Stay in Mexico City: 6 Neighborhoods Compared

Where you stay in Mexico City can completely change your experience. 🇲🇽 With a city this enormous, choosing the right neighborhood is almost as important as choosing your hotel.

Here are six of the best areas to consider:

🌳 Condesa — Leafy streets, Art Deco architecture, cafés and parks. Great for first-time visitors who want a relaxed, walkable base.

🌮 Roma Norte — One of my favorites for restaurants, cocktail bars, coffee shops, boutiques and nightlife. Stay here if food is a big part of your trip.

🏳️‍🌈 Zona Rosa — The obvious choice if LGBTQ+ nightlife is a priority. The bars and clubs around Calle Amberes are right outside your door.

🏙️ Reforma — Excellent for luxury hotels and a central location, with easy access to Chapultepec, Zona Rosa, Roma and Centro.

🛍️ Polanco — Mexico City at its most polished. Think luxury hotels, designer shopping, museums and some of the city’s biggest fine-dining names.

🏛️ Centro Histórico — Best for history and sightseeing, with the Zócalo, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Templo Mayor and other major landmarks nearby.

The best part? These areas are close enough that whichever one you choose, you can easily explore the others.

🍸 A Guadalajara Cocktail Bar Worth Seeking Out: Homebar

I recently checked out Homebar in Colonia Americana, and it quickly earned a spot on my list of places worth returning to. The concept is built around “mi casa es tu casa,” giving the bar a relaxed, welcoming feel.

I went straight for a couple of their signature margaritas, and both were excellent. Creative enough to feel different from your standard margarita while still keeping everything I love about the classic.

🌈 Mérida Gay-Friendly Hotels: Where to Stay

Mérida has some fantastic boutique hotels, and one that really stands out is Rosas & Xocolate on the iconic Paseo de Montejo. 🇲🇽

Set inside beautifully restored historic mansions, Rosas & Xocolate combines colonial architecture with contemporary Mexican design. With just 17 rooms, a pool, spa, restaurant and rooftop lounge, it feels much more intimate than a traditional hotel. My guide names it my Best Boutique Hotel pick in Mérida.

Its location is another big plus. You can walk Paseo de Montejo, explore Mérida’s architecture and museums, and have plenty of restaurants and nightlife within easy reach.

🐐 Guadalajara Food: One Dish Every Visitor Should Try — Birria

If there’s one dish you really need to eat when visiting Guadalajara, it’s birria. This Jalisco classic is slow-cooked until incredibly tender and can be made with goat, beef or lamb, although goat is the meat most traditionally associated with birria in Jalisco. It’s typically served with its rich consomé, fresh tortillas, onion, lime and salsa.

I have three spots I’d recommend:

🥣 Birriería David at Mercado Alcalde — A tiny, old-school market counter and one of my favorite places to experience birria in a traditional mercado setting.

🐐 Birriería Pepe El Torito in Santa Tere — A great neighborhood option in one of my favorite parts of Guadalajara, serving traditional birria in a no-frills setting.

🏛️ Birriería Las 9 Esquinas — One of Guadalajara’s classic birria destinations, located in the historic Nueve Esquinas neighborhood and particularly known for its birria de chivo.

If it’s your first trip to Guadalajara, don’t leave without trying birria. It’s one of the dishes that really defines the food culture of Jalisco. 🇲🇽

🇲🇽 Oaxaca City: Why It Belongs on Your Mexico Travel List

Oaxaca City is one of those places that packs an incredible amount into one destination: colorful colonial streets, Indigenous culture, fantastic markets, a thriving art scene and, of course, some of the best food in Mexico. Think mole, tlayudas, mezcal and restaurants ranging from tiny local spots to ambitious fine dining.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, the scene is smaller and more relaxed than Mexico City or Puerto Vallarta, but there’s a growing q***r community and a handful of LGBTQ+ nightlife options. The city is also incredibly walkable, making it easy to spend your days exploring Centro Histórico, Jalatlaco and Xochimilco before heading out for mezcal at night. 🏳️‍🌈

And Oaxaca makes a great base for exploring beyond the city, with Monte Albán, Hierve el Agua, artisan villages and mezcal country all within reach.
