I’m seeing so many people discouraged and frustrated by the low water levels on the Rhine and Danube Rivers especially.

If you’re on a river cruise and have to be bused to the next port, a few key things can make the experience more pleasant.

Bring your ID and of course credit cards or cash with you. The bus will make stops and you may want to buy something.

If you brought snacks, tuck some in your bag. You never know what’s going to be available.

Bring your noise cancelling head phones or your earbuds and watch a movie, listen to music, etc. just as you would on an airplane.

There will be a bathroom on the bus but be prepared. Bring some of those hygiene necessities.

Also, Chap stick, tissues, wet ones, hand lotion, a tooth brush? Maybe. Whatever you need to feel refreshed.

Finally, sit back and enjoy the scenery. Being grumpy and frustrated will just make you more grumpy and frustrated.

Scenes from
Viking Grand European cruise last year. The cruise traverses two rivers the Rhine and the Danube — connected by the Main . The river was a little low last year so we were bussed from Austria to Nuremberg. We were very lucky because it was just one day that was an issue.
I understand that this year things are much worse. Still, there’s a lot to see on this itinerary covering some of Europe’s most beautiful and interesting cities.
If you’ve experienced the low waters on the rivers I just want to say, don’t let it stop you from enjoying —the heat, the drought, and other climate issues aren’t going away.
Make the most of your time.

I finally got to visit the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. Is it worth it? I will drop the link and let you find out for yourself. It was my first time in Amsterdam and I loved it.
Let’s go back!

Amsterdam was my port for embarking on Viking cruises

I went in late June and we didn’t have any issues but I have read that now the Rhine is too low. To those of you who are on the bus tour, I did that last year so I feel your pain but I still loved the trip.

Tell me about your experience and have you been to Amsterdam?

What do you know about Plymouth, Devon, UK?
I visited recently and it turns out there’s a lot more going on there than the Mayflower. The Barbican is fantastic, as are the views from Plymouth Hoe.
But it’s the history and stories that make Plymouth come alive and more than the place a famous ship sailed from 400 years ago.
I had a tour with Select South West Tours and was regaled with stories of Plymouth—the people and the place. Plan to spend a day in Plymouth to really enjoy the sights. Have lunch, maybe a gin tasting, hang out on the Plymouth Hoe or take a boat tour.
Plymouth really is a must. I will be writing a lot more about Plymouth on Adventures of a Carry-on.

Summer travel can be stressful, especially if you’re traveling to popular destinations like London, Paris, Rome, etc. between the crowds and the heat, the challenges are real.

This summer has started out especially hot. So, how do you manage to get out and see the sites when it’s 100 degrees or more outside and the only AC is your hotel room?

Try a few of these ideas and let me know how it goes:
1. Start early. Get your site seeing done before noon.
2. Book tours that involve visiting churches, museums, shady parks, or forests.
3. Use a professional tour service that can help with perks like skipping the line or after hours access.
4. Use an umbrella
5. Carry a small hand held fan. I’ve seen a lot of these and they seem to work great.
6. Book a river cruise on the Danube or Rhine. Most ports are within walking distance of the city centers and if you get to hot you can head back to the air conditioned ship
A river cruise also allows you to avoid the frustration of moving hotel rooms in the heat.

I’ve been traveling around the EU and UK and it has been hot. Be sure to have water with you at all times.

Those are my top tips. What are yours?

Check out my site for articles on many river cruises and traveling around the UK by car, train, bus, boat, and foot.

Wondering what a Viking River Cruise is like?
I posted about this in detail on my Instagram page. I’ve just been on the Rhine again so sharing a few photos from the journey.
Ask me any questions and also I will post a link to an article on my website.
I’ve written about The Rhine Getaway, the Danube Waltz, Portugal’s River of Gold, and the Provence To Lyon itinerary.
