People ask me two things more than anything else.
Where are you from. And why did you stay in Mexico City.
I've gotten pretty good at redirecting the first one — a joke, a half-answer, a change of subject. The second one is harder to dodge, mostly because I still don't have a short version of it myself.
Eight years in this city and I still catch myself, some mornings, standing at the window with a cup of coffee, turning the question over like it's new. Why here. Out of every place I could have ended up, why did this one keep me.
This month I'm not going to answer it completely. That would defeat the purpose. But I'm going to let you see more of the ordinary, unglamorous reasons than I usually do — the coffee guy who's never asked my name, the neighbor who leaves food at my door, the sound this city makes at 6am before anyone's awake to hear it.
Maybe by the end of the month you'll have your own guess.
